Prof. Salahaddin Saeed, the President of KUST, recently published a paper titled “Application of the HELP Model in a Semi-Arid Waste Dumpsite….”, his paper focuses on solid waste management. Briefly; In developed urban areas, solid waste accumulation is a challenging issue, particularly in semi-arid regions like Sulaimaniyah Governorate, Iraq. With no designated landfill and improper waste management causes severe environmental impact. This study assesses the leachate impact, employing the HELP model to analyze water balance. This research evaluates the hydrological performance of the disposal site and analyzes the water balance, revealing an average yearly final water storage of 964.5 mm (2005–2018), and this highlighting the urgent need for improved waste management. The research offers valuable insights for addressing solid waste challenges in semi-arid locales, essential for devising effective policies and promoting sustainable leachate reuse in agriculture.
