On Sunday, April 23rd, 2017, Komar Research Center in cooperation with the Presidency Office has held a symposium on the use of solar energy in Kurdistan. The Sun is abundant in Kurdistan Region of Iraq, but there is a lack of interest in harnessing this free source of energy for the electricity and/or water heating.
There were four key speakers: Dr. Salah Aziz, President of Komar University, Dr. Hamid Zadeh, chairman of Petroleum Department, Dr. Khalid Ahmed, Lecturer at Electrical Engineering Department, University of Sulaimani and Mr. Othman Hama Rahim from Kurdistan Institution for Strategic Studies and Scientific Research.
Dr. Hamid Zadeh presented a seminar on the historical aspects of using solar power in humanity daily life and where the future hold for using it in the region. This followed by Dr. Salah Aziz presentation on the physics of solar energy and how much we can harness of the available solar rays including cost, durability, types and installation. He has also presented an example of using the solar panels to generate electricity.
Two more talks were presented on water heating systems and the future of glass windows by Dr. Khalid and Mr. Othman, respectively. Dr. Khalid showcased the suitability of the systems to the quality of water we have in Kurdistan. Mr. Othman presentation focused on combining the smart touch screen with the windows glasses that can generate its own energy from the Sun.
The attendees asked questions and discussed each subject with the speakers, and their questions were answered. At the end, certificate of appreciation was presented to the speakers by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Professor Dr. Jalal Saeed.
