Dr. Arsalan A. Othman, a faculty member of the Petroleum Engineering Department, is an active researcher who recently authored a paper titled “Comment on: “Solar system planetary alignment triggers tides and…”. His paper addresses the claim that the alignment of the Earth with two or more planets in a straight line can lead to earthquakes. This claim was put forth in the paper titled “Solar system planetary alignment triggers tides and earthquakes” (Journal of Coastal Conservation, 2021, 25: 30). To assess this claim, we first determined the Earth’s alignment with other planets by measuring the angles (azimuth) between them, including the Sun and Lona. Subsequently, we investigated whether there is a correlation between planetary alignment and earthquake occurrence. Earthquake and azimuth data were sourced from the USGS archive and NASA, respectively, spanning 297 days (from September 17, 2019, to July 8, 2020) with a 1-hour interval. Our findings conclusively demonstrate that there is no association between planetary alignment and earthquake occurrence.
